Would you like wine with your cheese?

You heard it from the grapevine

The 25th of July is a special day for lovers of the finer things in life. Balancing flavours, offsetting textures, and perfectly pairing to one’s palette is no better than in the form of wine and cheese.

Obviously, wine and cheese are an iconic pairing. However, at Blue Strawberry, we have not only expertly paired our reds, whites, rosés and sparklings with sumptuous cheeses but with our equally as delicious Spring Summer dishes. Offering the ideal summer bouquet to complement your meal – and a creamy indulgence to round it all off.

Our supplier: Jeroboams

At Blue Strawberry, we highly value our suppliers as they gift us with local, seasonal and delicious produce that reflects who we are as caterers. Our food is at the forefront of everything that we do, and the wine we serve next to these plates is vital to almost every event we cater for. London-based winery Jeroboams supply our varied and exciting wine list catering to us – and our clients – needs, wants and desires. Playing matchmaker, Blue Strawberry has a multitude of dairy suppliers, and Harvey & Brockless is a great one to pair with a Jeroboams bottle. And a Blue Strawberry feast.

Grape expectations

Here are a few of our favourite Spring Summer dishes and examples of perfectly paired wine and cheese: The fresh and zesty Stonehorse Riesling from the Clare Valley, South Africa is taut with acidity and a structured palate with tropical fruit. This lovely white pairs perfectly with our baked Halibut, barbeque leeks, chive and Riesling sauce. We would recommend a lovely salty blue cheese with an aromatic finish to pair with the sweet Riesling – oxford blue cheese is ideal.

Jeroboams recommends its French Sauvignon, Sancerre, Les Caillottes with a Blanche goats’ cheese. The cheese is cut beautifully by the Sauvignon’s elegantly balanced rich fruit and zesty palate. We love this combination as it pairs perfectly with our baked heritage tomato tatin, whipped goats’ cheese, and balsamic and roasted courgette.

As per the prestigious rule of pairing local wines with local cheese, Burgundy cheese Epoisses fits seamlessly with a Burgundy wine. The classic Bourgogne Pinot Noir, whose rounded flavours are ripe with cherry and plum, is made for our rich roast Guinea Fowl with girolle fricassee, truffle and tarragon rosti. Add in a soft slathering of Epoisses on a slice of French baguette with truffle lavender honey for added floral sweetness!

At Blue Strawberry, we pride ourselves on our lovely local wines, including the English sparkling wine Nyetimber Classic Cuvée made in West Sussex. It is elegant and citrussy with a fantastic combination of intensity, delicacy and length. Nyetimber is one of our favourites – we even served it at our coronation-themed showcase. It is local and luxurious and pairs beautifully with an English cheese like Baron Bigot. The unexpected mixture of acidic fizz, rich fat, and earthy flavours of the brie-inspired cheese is delicious – and wonderfully cleanses the palate. It’s also worth noting that we don’t always abide by our own rule of pairing regional wines with regional cheeses.  This gorgeous sparkling is a strong partner to many aromatic Asian cuisines with its citrussy character. We recommend the Nyetimber Vintage Blanc de Blanc with our sea trout mi cuit and tartare with asparagus gazpacho, hazelnut and wasabi leaves. Punchy, fragrant and fresh – perfect with our favourite English Sparkling.

Blue Strawberry Events

Why not choose a wine and cheese station instead of dessert when booking an event with us? Or do both! Perhaps a cheese tower instead of a wedding cake? Alternatively, choose from one of our cheese board options like our British board, including Black Bomber; Oxford Blue; Blanche goats cheese; Baron Bigot; fruit bread; cracker selection; grapes and celery; apple, onion, mustard seed and fennel chutney. Or our French board with Castello Blue; Comté; Epoisses; French Brie, crusty baguette, crackers, fig jelly, dried apricots, truffled lavender honey and Verdemanda olive oil. They can be served on individual boards or as a cheese table dressed by us.

We can pair any of your bespoke menu dishes with a wine and cheese option to match. So the question is, would you like wine with your cheese?

Why not indulge this July and celebrate National Wine and Cheese Day with Blue Strawberry!
